The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology

Pranav Mistry: The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology

About this talk

At TEDIndia, Pranav Mistry demos several tools that help the physical world interact with the world of data -- including a deep look at his SixthSense device and a new, paradigm-shifting paper "laptop." In an onstage Q&A, Mistry says he'll open-source the software behind SixthSense, to open its possibilities to all.

THE EFFECT OF MODERN TECHNOLOGIES ON COMMUNICATION PRACTICES

THE EFFECT OF MODERN TECHNOLOGIES ON COMMUNICATION PRACTICES

Music technology today

Music technology today Music is a universal language. Music is admired by all the people in the world. Today music can be composed using latest technologies like MIDI, computer software, etc. These technologies provide musicians with comfortable environment to compose music with high quality. This attracts and guides the children to develop their music skills. In this,

The modern technology has changed the communication landscape in different ways.  New information and communication technologies have offered means for paradigm shift in personal and business communication. There is little doubt in the fact that modern technologies have brought about a revolutionary transformation in the ways through which we communicate.  As the world ushers the new information age, there a different technological devices like television, hand phones, personal computers, the internet, and others that have established themselves as necessary in our daily life and have greatly changed the communication landscape reducing the world into a global village (Dephoff).    In the new information technology era, gone are the days when it took days to relay a message form one person to the other or from one organization to the other, as today, it takes the click of a button, in a matter of few seconds, to relay the intended information. However, it is important to note that while modern technologies have had positive impacts on communication, they also have hand negative impacts on communication practices.

Modern communication technologies have changed the speed of communication (Nelson).  Previously a letter sent through the post office took many days to reach destination and even in a neighborhood, it would take some few hours (Wainwright).  This has been drastically changed with the advent of new technologies. It only takes few seconds to pass on information from the source to the receiver.  An email is delivered in a matter of seconds, especially in countries that have broad bandwidth.   Tex messaging takes only few second to reach the receiver even if they are miles away from the sender.  It is possible today to reach anybody from any part of the world within the shortest time possible as long as they are within a telephone line.  In addition, it is possible today to address people far away within just few seconds through vide conferencing and other technologies. What is the implication of this on communication technologies?  There are many way in which the speed of communication has changed communication practices. First, people are communication more often because it only takes few seconds to reach other people.  Previously, speed was a major constraint on communication practice because people could speak only ones in a while (Covell 77).  Today, a father who is working in a different state can call his families every other morning and evening therefore bringing closer the social bond.  Second, this has encouraged long distance communication.  A father who was working in a different state from however the family lives was discouraged to communicate often because it took longer timer to relay information. This has greatly changed with the new technologies and long distance communication has now been enabled. With the growing wave of globalization, it is now possible for people to communicate with their families and friends in other continents.

Modern technologies have increased accessibility to communication devices thereby bring more people together (Nelson). Previously, one of the major barriers to worldwide communication was inaccessibility to communication devices. Although people were willing to communicate, it became difficult to participate in the global practice because they were alienated. For example, only those who could afford costly trunk calls could communicate with friends and families in different states or continents. However, this has been drastically changed with the advent of new communication technologies.  With cheap communication.

greenhouse gas diet

refrigerators go on greenhouse gas diet
GE says it will switch the gases used when pouring in foam insulation for refrigerator products, slashing the amount of greenhouse gases from production.
GE will change the gas used when pouring in foam insulation for refrigerator products, a move which will reduce greenhouse gases from production significantly.

General Electric's latest green-technology initiative will be found in unlikely place: the inside of a refrigerator.
The industrial giant tomorrow will announce that it has changed its refrigerator manufacturing to use a gas that dramatically reduces the amount of greenhouse gases emitted. GE will host an event at a Decatur, Ala., plant where the atmosphere-friendly gas has first been introduced into GE's refrigerators.
The gas, called cyclopentane, is used as a blowing agent for the foam insulation poured into refrigeration products during manufacture. GE said it will spend about $16 million to convert its Decatur facility, part of a larger investment in the facility, to use cyclopentane instead of HFC 134a, a refrigerant which traps heat in the atmosphere.
By switching over, GE will eliminate the same amount of greenhouse gases that 78,000 cars emit in a year, representing a 99 percent reduction, according to GE. The calculations were made using EPA data for the global-warming potential of different gases and were done in conjunction with consulting company GreenOrder, a GE representative said.
GE Appliances is making the switch to live up to the company's Ecomagination initiative to develop green-technology products and reduce the company's environmental footprint, said Paul Surowiec, the general manager for refrigeration at GE Appliances and Lighting. The company took a "clean sheet" approach to making refrigeration products to consider the performance as well as the environmental attributes from production to disposal, he said.
"There certainly were pockets before but we've seen a significant increase in the desire of consumers to hold us accountable for environmental stewardship," Surowiec said. "We were looking for optimization from an environment and energy perspective and this one hit home."
During operation, the blowing agent will improve the effectiveness of the insulation slightly, he added. GE earlier this year said it will participate in an EPA program to dispose of refrigerators so that ozone-depleting and greenhouse gases are captured when they are recycled.
The company plans to introduce cyclopentane to its other refrigeration products manufactured in the U.S. by 2014.

White iPhone finally launching worldwide

Apple's long-awaited white iPhone will retail for $199 and $299 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively. The smartphone will be available to both AT&T and Verizon Wireless customers

After a long wait, the white iPhone 4 is finally launching worldwide
"The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it's beautiful," Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said today in a statement. "We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we've worked to get every detail right."
Apple first unveiled the white iPhone last June with the announcement of the iPhone 4. Like the black version of the smartphone, the white model comes with a Retina display and a front-facing camera for FaceTime video chatting.
Not long after last June's announcement of the white smartphone, Apple acknowledged that production issues would delay the device's launch to July. Further issues forced the company to push the release to late 2010. Following another admission by Apple that it could not meet its self-imposed deadline, the company promised a spring 2011 launch.
